Maps were useful to armies as the helped in identifying the nearby areas and thus launch a devastating attack or protect a region with the help of the knowledge of the nearby areas.
The were also able to make secret passages and bunkers through the knowledge they gained by the maps. So maps of a region were/are of utmost importance to attack/defend a place and hence to the army. Hoping that the answer helps.
