Mourad couldn't possibly buy a horse because he was a Garoghlanian, a member of an Armenian tribe living among the lush fruit orchards and vineyards of California. This community was supposedly, one of the poorest communities at the time so Mourad, or almost anybody in the tribe didn't have the money to buy a horse because of their poverty.
