the rulers in ancient times recorded thier victories on  hard surface because of the following reasons -

1] writing on hard surface like stone and pillars are very clear and legibale
2]stone and copper plates offer much resistance to wear and tear , if saved properly
3]to show off thier victories in public in a more precise manner
4]records of thier victory would last for longer times
