Pearl has always been a source of power and wealth in the UAE before the discovery of oil. ... Demand for pearls has come from their unique qualities such as their colour, lustre and luminosity, and their use, mainly in jewellery. Pearls have historically been an important precious gem traded worldwide.

The people of ancient UAE traded items like pearls, incense, copper, spices

Explanation:

  • Pearls, incense, copper, spices were once were like UAE oil from the 19th century and pearls were considered a pillar of the economy of the country; a pillar which had made an immense contribution to development and growth.
  • Even 6000 BC, Bronze Age and  Stone Age alliances formed intricate trading routes between  Mesopotamia, Arabia, and the Valley of the Indus. They traded mainly with the Dilmun Empire (centered on modern Bahrain) and in copper mined in Magan (Oman's  ancient name ).
  • After the second millennium BC, all traces of the great Magan civilization ceased, with historians speculating that desertification in the region has exacerbated its demise. The die was nonetheless cast: it was to be a state of trading routes  where frank incense from the south transported  by camel caravans in the major deserts of interior were exchanged for textiles and spices from India, bitumen from the Dead Sea and porcelain and silk from China .
