The real thing is that British arrived here only after 1600 AD. Much before this, Portugese arrived here in 1498 AD and started business and then French and Dutch also followed. Which means when British arrived here, kings and traders were not facing difficulty to talk with them as they were already familiar with various European languages owing to the rich trade and economic transactions they were doing with these predecessors.
