The children sold the object for a penny as the children in their innocence did not have much value for things nor did they care, whereas the the traveller sold it to the king as a curiosity as he was aware the object would fetch him a handsome amount, even more if he sold it to the king, for the king would certainly be curious in such objects and also be able to afford it than a commoner.
