Democracy in Pakistan is ineffective since power to take final decisions rested with army officials and with General Musharraf, and none of them were elected by the people
Explanation:
- Pakistan cannot be called a democracy under the rule of General Musharraf, for different reasons. Although the people of Pakistan had elected their representatives to the provincial & national assemblies, in the year 1999 through a bloodless military coup, Pervez Musharaf over threw the civilian government and started ruling. In the year 2000 through a referendum he called himself the President of Pakistan that that granted him a 5 year extension.
- In a democracy the authority to take final decisions resides with the representatives who are elected by means of fair and free election by the people/citizens of nation. Whereas, under General Musharaf officers of the army and General Musharraf, whom the people did not elect took decisions. This occurs in many countries' where they officially have an elected parliament and government but with those who are not elected, the true power lies.
