It is vitally important in a democracy that individual judges and the judiciary as a whole are impartial and independent of all external pressures and of each other so that those who appear before them and the wider public can have confidence that their cases will be decided fairly and in accordance with the law.

Answer:

Yes, judiciary should be (remain is not the right word because, in my honest opinion, it has not been so) independent, impartial, and free from political pressure or any other influence.

The major litigant in our courts are the governments (both Central and state). For democracy to take deeper roots and flourish, judiciary should be able to adjudicate cases fairly and honestly, as per the due processes of the law, and this clearly implies that it should not unfairly side with the governments.
