mainly to find out about their enemy's plans of attack so that he
could make better ones to attack hos enemy. By attacking enemies,
the king became more powerful, thus gaining more land and larger
armies

The spies were usually the eyes and ears of the king. They informed the king about all the details of the government administration. Not only this, but the spies were also sent to the other kingdoms to gather information about their military secrets and future plans which ultimately helped the king to gain power and control over them.
