this is because during what historians called the "modern" age, places had modernity such as new thought in science and the arts. however, india being under colonial rule could not be called modern because all these forces of modernity did not exist

The modern period is also known as colonial period in the history of India because during the colonial rule, many inventions and discoveries were prompted. The major one was invention of machineries for the industrial use.
It leads to the establishment of rail routes to very long as well as very dangerous spots across the India. The traditional practices were complimented with modern practices and the concept of liberty; individuality and freedom were also introduced in the lives of common citizens.
