The objects like trees, buildings, electric poles etc. appear to be     moving when you are sitting inside a moving bus or train is due to a condition called Relative motion.

  • All motion is relative to the observer or to some objects which are fixed.

  • For example, when  moving in a car, in passenger's frame both he and his colleagues are moving together. That is no relative motion between them.

  • Actually tree is stationary.

  • But there is a relative velocity between tree and passenger. Hence we felt as tree is moving.

  • Relative velocity is the difference in velocity between passenger and tree.

The phenomenon where it appears that the stationary objects like trees, lampposts, electric poles seem to move backward when viewing from inside a moving train or vehicle is due to relative motion.

Explanation:

  • When one is observing the outside from inside a vehicle, the person is moving at a speed in which the vehicle is moving forward.
  • The objects outside the vehicle are stationary with zero speed. Due to relative motion, when speeding or one speeding and other one stationary object approaches one another from the opposite direction, the viewer on each side feels the other side is moving at a Speed 1 + Speed 2 cumulative speed.
  • Hence it appears as if the trees, electric poles and others are moving.
