Old Age Needs More Attention And Care
Theodore Roosevelt, the great American President has rightly said, ‘Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you've got to start young.’ Undoubtedly old age with all its grandeur is a wonderful phase of a man’s life, yet the challenges of it are many. It is the last stage of a man’s life after which he has to start his journey to the unknown beyond. Man’s entire life is riddled with challenges; so this age is no exception.
The first and foremost challenge is that of health. Owing to ageing and the worn out organs and metabolism, man is prone to falling ill. Financial worries of medical expenses further add to the illness. In order to stay healthy, man must take care of his health since his early forties. Balanced diet, exercise, mediation, healthy life style should be adopted. A medical insurance for the old age must be arranged.
The second old age problem that arises is loneliness; children when grow up, move out; early demise of spouse; generation gap can cause loneliness and misery. Loneliness can be tackled with a healthy attitude to life. in old age men should remain active in day to day and other constructive activities such as reading, gardening, travelling etc.
The most crucial crisis in old age is finances. Since man retires in old age, his earnings almost become very low. So he must plan his future quite early; proper savings, investments for future must be done well in time.
Old age certainly has its own crises; but they can be well taken care of with proper planning. All of us must prepare for our old age well in advance. We should consider old age as a grand party, and we must make proper arrangements for it.
In the chapter, The Portrait of a Lady, we read about the grandmother facing similar challenges. She faced loneliness, sickness, and sudden death. However, her family members were very caring to her.
