Answer:
Explanation:
Indigo cultivation was carried out by the Ryots under the Ryoti system. Under the above arrangement the planters forced the ryots to sign an agreement or contract and in some cases even the village headmen were forced to put their signature on the agreement or contract on ryots behalf. After accepting the contract, the ryots would receive advance in the form of cash from the planters. The ryots were committed to undertake indigo cultivation on receiving such loans on at least 25% of their land holding.
During the end of the 18th century, industrialization started in Britain and production of cotton showed sign of expansion which brought about a huge demand for cloth dyes. The West Indies and America`s supply of indigo showed sign of decline because of various reasons which brought about a huge demand for Indian indigo
In March 1859 ryots of Bengal refused to carry out the Indigo cultivation further as the planters would pay them very low prices for the crop which eventually put them in a huge debt trap. The ryots soon showed their anger by not paying rents to the planters, attacking the indigo production premises.
Hope this helps.
