There was a traditional belief in the then Indian brahmins that if they crossed the sea to travel overseas, then they will lose their religion as well as caste. It was a taboo for them to travel overseas.
So, when in 1824,the sepoys were asked to Burma by sea route, they all strictly refused and were eventually punished by the British.
