In recent years, there is a tendency for the mills to shift and concentrate in the southern and western states of India, especially in Maharashtra. This is because the cane produced in here has a higher sucrose content. The cooler climate ensures a longer crushing season. . Along with Maharashtra, the other important sugar producers of South India are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu.
