Answer:
The story "Woman on platform 8" shows the serendipitous meeting of Arun a lonely, solitary boy at the Ambala station waiting for train to his boarding school and a queer, dark eyed, simply dressed and softly voiced woman who showed a reflection of kindness just like any person with close correspondence. The train is scheduled to arrive at the station at midnight and Arun is feeling lonely and deserted sitting on his suitcase when Arun hears a soft voice addressing him. Then begins a concatenation of incidents which gradually brought Arun closer to the unfamiliar woman who seemed caring like someone very familiar. Woman's overprotective nature towards Arun, gently holding Arun's hand, offering food to him and most importantly serving as a short time necessitate partner made Arun not only curious but it made him slightly fond of her. Every reader of this story would never deny the fact that at least once in the story they felt Arun's parents incautious and irresponsible while this unfamiliar woman very sensible and responsible. The actual story of this unknown strange woman on platform 8 is something every reader of the story would like to know without which the story seemed to have something missing but just as many other stories by Ruskin Bond this story too ended with an unaccounted part which could have been added to this story.
Coming to the context the unexpected woman on the platform did all from her side to keep the young boy Arun happy and occupied. She made him felt complete and accompanied which Arun's own mother or father failed to make at that time. The uncanny woman had an distinctive emotional aura which in a very short period of time left an impact on Arun.
Arun met his schoolfriend Satish along his mother on the platform. On being asked the unknown women replied that she was Arun's mother to which Arun did not contradict. Satish's mother seemed to have a negative image of Arun's so called mother probably due to her simple appearance. When the train arrived Arun and Satish boarded the train and took their seats. From the open windows both the boys gazed back at the platform. Satish's mother gave some advise to her son like not sticking heads outside the window or jumping off a moving train and shared the same advise with Arun as if she believed Arun's mother not capable of enough wisdom but the unknown woman who is considered as Arun's mother now had completed her duties as a responsible mother even if she is not Arun's own or real mother which showed her genuine concern for Arun.
