There are many reasons that make tourism an important occupation in the Lakshwadeep Islands.

1.    The islands do not have extensive area to set up industries on a large scale.

2.    Even if the government sets up huge industries, the population is not enough to be able to supply manpower to the industries, because people are already employed in the agriculture, fishery and coconut coir industries.

3.    Lakshwadeep islands are isolated from the main land. This reduces employment opportunities.

4.    The islands do not have a very rich flora and fauna and hence a very diverse agricultural industry is not a feasible option. The main option remains coconut farming and a few other crops.

5.    Lakshwadeep has ample scenic beauty, that brings in tourists. In fact, tourism has been on the rise lately.

So, logically speaking, tourism is an important industry, which also provides employment to the locals while bringing in revenue.

Tourism is an important occupation in the Lakshadweep Islands but certainly it is not the only occupation in the Lakshadweep Islands. The economy of Lakshadweep is mainly dependent on agriculture, fishery, and other industries like boat building industry, coir industry etc.

Agriculture earns the livelihood for more than 90 % of the population of this union territory. Coconut cultivation is a major economic activity of the people. In some of the interior parts of the islands water logging is done to facilitate cultivation of rice and other food crops. Jowar, ragi, sweet potatoes, sorgum and banana are the other products of cultivation in Lakshadweep. Fisheries is also an important economic activity in Lakshadweep. Tourism industry is developing very fast. Coconut cultivation still remains the most important and dependable source to generate income in Lakshadweep.
