Coastal zones are transitional regions within the land and sea characterized by very high biodiversity and they incorporate some of the strongest and most delicate ecosystems on earth, like mangroves and coral reefs. At the same time, seashores are under very high population pressure due to accelerated urbanization processes.

Additionally, among all different parts of the world coastal areas are those which are mostly ministered by vacationists and in many coastal areas, tourism sponsors is the most extraordinary economic activity. In the Mediterranean area, for instance, tourism is the first economic action for islands like the Balearic Islands, and Sicily.
