Both the advance and withdrawal of monsoon over Indian mainland depends on several factors all around the globe. Both phases can be induced or hindered by these factors. Lets first see the point of interest ie withdrawal of monsoon over Indian mainland.

By September, the low pressure area over North west India becomes weak.

As Sun starts retreating south after Autumn equinox, temperature over North India becomes to cool, high pressure area begins to replace the low pressure area over North west India.

As time progresses, Inter tropical Convergence Zone starts to shift to south making the rain activity to retreat south from the plains of North India.

Jet stream over Indian mainland turns from west to east as the Siberian high pressure area builds up by the start of October, exiting South west monsoon from India.

Convergence zone of North-east winds and South-west winds becomes the withdrawal of South west monsoon.

  • The lofty mountains cause the monsoon winds to deflect towards the west over the Ganga plains.
  • Withdrawal or the retreat of the monsoon is a more gradual process.
  • The withdrawal of the monsoon begins in north-western states of India by early September.
