The island was a safe place as noone will visit the Island. His father has told him about the Island , also said that the Islands will be the stepping stones for Japan. Sadao was kind even to his enemy. He had humanity in him.

Dod Sadao had chosen the island as the safe place for the soldier as there was no one in that island. Rom was an American soldier and people of Sadao community refused to help a war enemy.
That is why Sadao has to select a place where Tom can stay safely out of others sight. According to his opinion the island was the best place for temporary shelter of wounded Tom.
