Why does a 5kg iron ball sink in water while a 5ton ship floats

Iron ships don't sink because, on the inside, they are filled with air. Despite the fact that iron is heavier than water and you would expect iron to sink, the air trapped in the middle reduces the average weight of the whole structure to less than that of the same volume of water, and hence the structure floats.
