why does a ball rolls faster on floor than a mat ?

It's simple ! It's because of frictional force ! There are more irregularities on a mat than on plane floor

This is because the mat is more rough than the floor which is smooth. Therefore, more frictional force is generated by the mat as compared to the floor. Also, the mat also shows more irregularities and elevations.
