If we want to step off the boat we have to push the boat with our foot backward. Then only, boat applies force of reaction on our foot in forward direction towards shore and we are able to leave the boat. It is due to this push-force that boat tends to leave the shore.
Even when we walk on a road, we push the ground backward and the frictional force provides the reaction force on us in forward direction which makes us walking. Imagine, what would happen had there been no frictional force.
