in a bar magnet, when a pole (say N) is brought to the north pole of the compass needle, the two poles which get deflected because because similar poles repel each other and the magnetic power of the bar magnet is more than the needle so it is the compass needle that gets deflected .

HI
A compass needle is a small bar magnet with one north and the other south pole. When a magnet is brought near the compass, the north pole of the compass gets attracted by the south pole of the magnet and vice-versa.Therefore, the compass needle gets deflected when brought near a bar magnet.
