Compass needle is also a bar magnet.
I think you know that magnets get attracted.
When the magnetic field lines of magnet reaches to compass needle as usually it shows deflection.
Aahh we can say that as torque.
And that is reason we use compass to show proper direction
The compass point out towards North on earth because huge magnetism was present on North side of earth.

A compass needle get deflected when brought near a bar magnet because the bar magnet exert a magnetic force on the compass needle which is itself a Tinny pivoted magnet. it is also a magnet so when a compass needle brought near a bar bar magnet the compass needle get deflected
