Why does a compass needle placed near a wire gets deflected when an electric current is passed through it?

The compass needle placed near a wire gets deflected when an electric current is passed through it because when the current is passed the wire shows some magnetic property not that much to attract something but some magnetic forces are formed as a result the compass needle gets deflected.
