A compass needle is a smallbar magnet. When it is brought near a bar magnet, its magnetic field lines interact with that of the bar magnet. Hence, a compass needle shows adeflection when brought near the bar magnet.

It is because compass needle is itself acts as small bar magnet with north and south poles . Hence , when magnet is brought near it , it gets deflected .
