The property of a metal having a shiny surface is called metallic luster. SOme metals have shiny surfaces in pure state. For example, gold, silver, copper etc.
Copper vessels get tarnished when come in contact with air or moisture. Due to which a layer is formed over copper vessels. This layer mainly consists of black copper oxide and green copper carbonate. This clearly shows that the layer formed is basic in nature. In order to remove this layer, copper vessels are always rubbed with those things/materials which have acidic effect like lemon. The basic copper oxide or copper carbonate reacts with citric acid of lemon and forms salt which is then washed away with water and we get a shiny surface of copper vessel.
