why does a cricket player lower his hands while catching the ball

he does so to maximise the time so as to avoid large momentum or force which avoid hurting

when ball falls into the hands of the player the momentum of ball may hurt when he catches the ball, but if he/she draws backwards his/her hands the the momentum is reduced and player receives less momentum i.e. less pain while catching.
