why does a cup made of aluminium foil float while a crumpled sheet of same sinks in water

A cup made of aluminium foil floats on water because it's surface area becomes large, so it displaces the same amount of water from the water body as it's weight.

On the other hand a crumpled sheet of same sinks because making it in form of sheets decreases their surface area so they sink.
