The fielder in the game of cricket pull his hands back when he catches a ball to decrease the impact of ball on his hand.
Actually, the ball having inertia of motion, if that fielder catches without lowering, he would get hurt, but if he lowers his hand, he is decreasing the inertia of motion and hence impact of ball will be less.
