Why does a fielder withdraw his hands after catching a ball?

A fielder lowers his hand while catching a ball to lowers the inertia of motion.
As the ball is in motion, if it directly comes to hand, lots of force is required to stop and hence the hand may hurt much, whereas if the hand is lowered , by doing this , the fielder slows down the speed of the ball slowly which will hurt him less.
