why does a fluorescent tube light glow brightly

Hey there,

A fluorescent light glows because the electrical discharge in the mercury vapor inside it emits ultraviolet light. When a UV photon strikes an atom in the phosphor it is absorbed, and the energy used to knock one or more of its electrons into a higher energy state.
