a fuse is to prevent any kind of short circuit

thus,if excess of current flows in the wire

than heat will be produced according to joule's heating effect..

heat =  {i}^{2} rt

since,the fuse should have low melting point so that it melts when excess of current flows and cuts off the circuit and the appliances are saved from getting damaged..
