hey....dear....here is ur answer.........
bcoz it gets oxidized with our atmosphereic gases......
copper particles get coated with green color which is due to the formation of basic copper carbonate.....

it is due to oxidation. The copper reacts with the oxygen present in open environment, and produce copper oxide. The green layer on copper surface is copper oxide.
The reaction is given by:
2Cu + O2 = 2 CuO.
