the hydrometer have narrow stem because it sinks to a greater depth and the graduation are well spaced and the narrowness increases it's sensitivity and at the tip it contains lead.

Hydrometer has a narrow stem at the bottom which carry lead . It is so because the hydrometer balances its own weight without tilting by the lead concentration towards its centre .
