A karateka strikes an ice slab as fast as possible with his or her hand. In doing so, the entire momentum of the hand is reduced to zero in very short time. The momentum of the karateka's hand is transferred to the ice. This is what breaks the ice and causes the hand to stop. However, if the ice does not break, it will return some of the momentum causing the hand to reverse direction and/or break.
