Why does a lake freeze at the top first, rather than throughout or at the bottom?

Because the upper surface of lake cools first ..

- Water gets cooler from the top to bottom.
- This is the reason the lake get frozen at top but not at the bottom.
- The coldness of the surface then absorbs the heat below the surface,making the bottom to freeze.
- But in a refridgerator, the water freezes from bottom to top because it gets cooler from the bottom to the top.
