Explanation:

When copper wire is dipped into solution of silver nitrate, copper being a more reactive metal than silver displaces silver from its compound by forming copper nitrate with a shiny greyish white deposit of silver on the copper wire.

A layer of silver deposits on the copper wire when dipped in silver nitrate solution because of the following reasons -

  • Copper is more electronegative than silver,
  • When coming in contact with silver nitrate, copper displaces silver to form blue colored solution of copper nitrate.
  • The displaced Silver ion is reduced to form precipitates of silver deposited on the wire.
  • The chemical reaction can be represented as -

Cu + AgNO₃ ---------> 2Ag + Cu(NO₃)₂

  • Such reactions in which an element is replaced from a compound by a more reactive element are known as single displacement reactions.
  • Silver nitrate is salt, in its aqueous solution salt is present in the form of Ag⁺² and NO₃⁻.
  • When copper is dipped in the solution, Cu⁺² cations displace silver to form copper nitrate.
