The lump of cotton gets shrink in water cause the cotton is a light waited and absorbable fiber and that's why u use it in summer for sweat absorbing so if u put the cotton wool shrink cause it absorb the water which makes it heavy and shrinks it.hope it helped u

Cotton wool remains fluffy because of air trapped in it. When the cotton is dipped in water, the water fills up the spaces occupied by the air in the cotton and the air escapes. Therefore the cotton ball shrink when dipped in water.
