The head of the matchstick is coated with a mixture of antimony trisulphide and potassium
chlorate . The side of the matchbox is coated with some red phosphorus . When rubbing the matchstick against the matchbox due to friction, heat is produced and red phosphorus gets converted in white phosphorus and reacts with potassic chlorate and produces enough heat to ignite the antimony trisulphide. Now the heat produced is enough to start the combustion process and thus it produces flame!
