Mercury cell give constant voltage through out its life

Explanation:

  • The object which can convert the chemical energy present in it to electrical energy is called as cell or battery.
  • The conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy requires the occurrence of a chemical reaction which demands dissociation of composition substances into ions.
  • The mercury cell is exceptional in working mechanisms when compared with other type of cells.
  • It is because the overall reaction of the mercury cell yields zinc hydroxide and mercury as the products.
  • As it doesn't yield any ions and is not dependent on them mercury cells give constant voltage through out its life.
