Why does a ray light bend towards the base of the prism when it suffers refraction through a prism ?

The ray entering one face of the prism and leaving from the other edge suffers refractions at two points. At the first point, it moves towards the normal whereas at the other point, it moves away from the normal. Both these in the same directiom,i.e., towards the base.
