Lung tissue is delicate, and more pressure
INSIDE than out can rupture It. Conversely more
pressure outside (water depth) makes it
impossible to breathe properly, unaided. You
can't breathe through a tube held aloft if you
are more than a foot or 2 underwater. Your
diaphragm is too weak
So one other reason for having a pressurised air
tank, besides lots of storage of air, is to always
have air at the mouthpiece at about the same
pressure as the surrounding water. This
pressure increases by 1 atm for every 33 ft of
sea water.
A measure of a good regulator is to say it is
easy breathing
