Why does a ship made up of iron and steel float in water whereas a small piece of iron sink in water?

Iron ships don't sink because, on the inside, they are filled with air. Despite the fact that iron is heavier than water and you would expect iron to sink, the air trapped in the middle reduces the average weight of the whole structure to less than that of the same volume of water, and hence the structure floats.

Hence a ship floats in water. On the other hand, a piece of iron is denser than water, so it sinks in water.
