why does a snail leave a trail of mucous as it crawls ?

snails produces slime, a kind of mucus. as they move on the slime, it helps them to stick over whatever surface they are on while their body is at rest. it also protects their skin from uv rays and bacteria.. it even helps them in summer to remain dry and lubricated
