Litmus paper contains a mixture of pH-sensitive dyes extracted from various species of lichen. Most of the dyes have a 7-hydroxyphenoxazone chromophore. The red form is a weak diprotic acid that changes color from red to purple to blue upon successive losses of protons in neutral and basic solution.
