Sodium Chloride is an ionic substance.

Ionic substance are polar and they dissolve in water to form ions.

The ions formed are Sodium and Chloride ions.

These ions are mobile and move easily within the solution.

Due to their mobility they are able to carry electric current through the solution.

The gas formed at the anode is Chlorine gas.

The addition of sodium chloride salt makes the water a better conductor to electricity due to the dissolving of the suitable solvent or molten solvent that is salt.

It provides a path to the object helping them to easily electrolyze.

The gas that sodium metal and chlorine gas are eliminated out of the mix.
