Why does AlCl3 exists as monomer in vapour phase at high temperature and as a dimer at lower temperature?

At low temprature, AlCl3 exists as a close packed lattice of Cl− with Al3+ occupying octahedral holes. On heating Al2Cl6 species are formed.
