Aluminium metal does not react with water under ordinary conditions because of thin layer of aluminium oxide on its surface.

Explanation:

When aluminium is present in nature or placed under ordinary conditions then due to the presence of moisture in air a layer of oxide gets deposited on the surface of metal (aluminium).

This layer is thin in nature.

Therefore, due to the presence of this oxide layer on the metal when it is exposed to water under ordinary conditions then metal does not come directly in contact with water molecules.

As a result, no reaction takes place.
